With India facing a surge in COVID-19 cases, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday urged the Centre to evolve a national policy to deal with the pandemic after bringing about a political consensus on it.
In a video message, she said it is time for the central and state governments to wake up and fulfill their duties.
Gandhi also said COVID-19 jabs should be provided free of cost to all citizens and sought compulsory licensing to ramp up vaccine production to speed up the country s inoculation drive to help save Indians.

Roadmap in place for enforcement of COVID protocols and conducting safe and peaceful counting, police says.
Both the Mitrajot and Mahajot alliances are exuding confidence about forming the next government in Assam ahead of the counting of results of the Assam Assembly elections on Sunday.
Mitrajot is the four-party alliance headed by the BJP that hopes to retain power and Mahajot comprising 10 parties is headed by opposition Congress.

PUDUCHERRY: The Election Commission of India has made elaborate arrangements to announce the early trends and the final results of assembly elections in the Union territory of Puducherry and four states besides byelections, said Puducherry district collector and district officer Purva Garg.
The commission will update the round-wise trends of each constituency every few minutes and announce the results on its website https://results.eci.gov.in and through the mobile application Voter Helpline’.
The counting of votes in Puducherry will commence at 8am on Sunday at three centres in the Puducherry region covering 23 assembly constituencies, a centre at Karaikal covering five constituencies and a centre for Mahe and Yanam each covering one constituency each.
